A Fine Beginning is a Welsh photography collective that offers a platform to discover and showcase photography being made in and about Wales. The collective takes it’s name from the first chapter of Dylan Thomas’s unfinished novel ‘Adventures in the Skin Trade’.
The collective launched with a publication in May 2013 at the publishing weekend of the inaugural Diffusion: Cardiff International Festival of Photography and consists of five photographers – Abbie Trayler-Smith, James O Jenkins, Gawain Barnard, Jack Latham and Francesca Jones.
Our first exhibition A Fine Beginning: Made in Wales was at Arcade Cardiff in March 2014 showing work from the collective as well as selected images from our blog. The second ‘Made in Wales’ exhibited at Oriel Colwyn during September 2014 and featured work by 21 photographers from our blog.
In August 2014 we joined Scottish collective Document Scotland in an exhibition called ‘Common Ground’ at Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow. The exhibition featured new work from both collectives (you can purchase the accompanying publication here).
In November 2014 we featured at ‘Lens 2014: Festival of Welsh Documentary Photography’ at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
In 2015 we exhibited our Made in Wales II exhibition at Cardiff MADE (September) and at Carousel London (November). From March to April 2016 the exhibition is at Oriel Colwyn. A press release for Made in Wales II is available at A Fine Beginning – Made in Wales and our exhibition flyer is here.
In 2016 our ‘Common Ground’ exhibition with Document Scotland was shown at The Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff and in September we took part and spoke at The Eye International Photography Festival in Aberystwyth.
